Review of V&A
Exhibitions
Abbie Bower
We headed to the Victoria and Albert museum in London to
visit the Hollywood Costume and Ball gown exhibitions.
The first exhibition that we went to was the Hollywood Costumes.
It brought together over 100 of the most
iconic movie costumes from across a century of film-making. It gave us an opportunity
to see the clothes worn by unforgettable and beloved characters such as Dorothy
Gale, Indiana Jones, Jack Sparrow and Darth Vader. I liked this
exhibition because from the simplest of costumes to the more extravagant ones, it
consisted of a variety of colours, patterns and materials that they were made
from. Although there were many costumes that I recognised from recent films
like Superman and Harry Potter, there were also a few that I didn’t know about
so this was interesting to find out about the older costumes that the
exhibition had.
After viewing the Hollywood
costumes we went to the Ball gown exhibition. The dresses that were on show were elegant and
iconic. Some had really nice embroidery parts on them that were very intricate
and looked carefully sewn. The variety of dresses were all different lengths,
colours and shapes, which made them look unique. There were dresses in this
exhibition made by a variety of designers including Alexander McQueen, Erdem and
Stella McCartney.
Overall I really liked the two
exhibitions that we visited at the Victoria and Albert museum. Also, each dress
had its own information plaque listing the name, designer and also what the
inspiration was for that particular design. This was good because it helped us
get an idea of why a designer chose to create what they did.
